Reduction of the Bacterial Regrowth Potential With Preozonation and Biologically Active In-Line Direct Filtration
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

The results reported in this paper find, overall, direct filtration with biologically active granular activated carbon/sand was effective in reducing the bacterial regrowth potential when combined with preozonation. The high quality of raw water from the perspective of biological stability was evident when average raw water assimilable organic carbon values (AOC) were compared to a range of 10 to 50 ug/l. The effects of preoxidation with ozone on the raw water AOC values were substantial, especially the AOC concentration due to the growth of Spirillum strain NOX. This elevated level of AOC was effectively reduced by biologically active GAC/S filters to within a biologically stable range.
