Enhancing Production Performance in Three Valleys Water

Description

The water industry in England is tightly regulated for both water quality and value for money. Price caps are set for each individual water company’s charges, which are based on the retail price index plus or minus a constant referred to as “K”. A positive K allows for additional capital investment required, for instance, to cover new treatment required due to new water quality legislation. The K factor for each company applies each year for five years. Every five years the price formula for each company is reviewed. Political pressure and the current views of the public mean that this year, besides the price cap which will almost certainly bring about a negative K for most companies in spite of the need for capital investment, there will be a one off price reduction of around 10-15 percent. This is requiring all water companies to investigate options for efficiency savings. There is also an ever tighter regulatory environment for water quality. Recent reports have emphasized the need for constant vigilance of water treatment trends coupled with the need to optimize treatment processes. Thus the need for increased efficiency must be coupled with increased effectiveness in managing production sites. This paper details how Three Valeeys Water is meeting these challenges.
