Description
In this research, 27 waters were obtained fromutilities across the United States (3 for each of the 9elements in the 3 ¿¿ 3 enhanced coagulation matrix ofthe Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule) inorder to evaluate how the waters responded to coagulationand chlorination. The objectives of this workwere to: reinforce findings and improve on limitationsassociated with an earlier analysis of the InformationCollection Rule database; investigate thesusceptibility of the waters to removal of organic matterby enhanced coagulation; and, evaluate theremoval of total organic halide (TOX) precursors andrelate this behavior to the specific ultravioletabsorbance (SUVA) of the raw water. Results demonstrated that SUVA can be used byutilities to determine the amenability of source waterorganic material to removal by coagulation. Recognitionof the value of SUVA by utilities and legislatorscould assist in defining more appropriate and achievabletreatment strategies in the future. Includes 30 references, tables, figures.
