The Impact of Chemical Sequencing on Filtration Performance
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2000

Document Format: PDF

Description

This project is examining the effect of coagulation chemical sequencing, includingtwo-stage coagulation processes, on filtration performance. The first stage of this work, which is described here, studied the effect of five coagulation variables on microfloc size and formation rates. The variables studied included: natural organic matter (NOM); pH; coagulant dose; turbidity; and coagulant addition mode (single vs. two-stage). A photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA) was developed for this project and is being used as an on-line tool for evaluating coagulation processes, in addition to jar test experiments. The PDA is sensitive to changes in the averageparticle size of a suspension and was able to detect and monitor these changes following the addition of coagulation chemicals. Includes 8 references, figures.
